Fabulous Friday: The Go-Go's

First of all, let me share my distaste for the use of the apostrophe in their name. It should be The Go-Gos, am I right? But I guess that looks a little funny. I'm pleased that The B-52s bypass the apostrophe but then I guess it's a little easier to visualize going from a number to a an S versus a letter to an S...


ANYWAY, who doesn't love The Go-Go's? Here's the official video for "We Got the Beat," their number one single:



That BEAT! I know that the lead singer usually gets the biggest piece of glory in a band and Belinda Carlisle is wonderful but this song is driven by the fierce drumming of Gina Schock and the low-down funky bass of Kathy Valentine.


According to Wikipedia, they were the first all-female band who wrote their own material and played their own instruments to have an album at the top of the charts, their debut album Beauty and the Beat. No all-female band with these credentials has done it since. They were a fantastic mixture of punk and pop, both in their music and their styling.


Drew Barrymore gave the ultimate tribute to them when she inducted them into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021:
