CDA: Duncan Sheik
I read in the NY Times about the death of Duncan Sheik, age 56. He was a flash-in-the-pan pop singer who found his true calling as the composer of Broadway musicals. He won two Tonys for his adaptation of Spring Awakening. That show also won Best Musical. This song is the last song in the show, seen here in the 2022 West End production:
I saw the Broadway revival in 2015 and loved it:
I'm told that his hit song, "Barely Breathing," was inescapable in 1996. I watched the video when I read about his death and hm, somehow it escaped me! I honestly don't think I'd ever heard it before. The song is good, I especially love the bridge, and he's super cute, with that sad intellectual look that makes some people swoon:
I saw two other shows of his off Broadway, The Secret Life of Bees and Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice.
On a side note, I had a conversation with my mom when Brian Wilson died last year. He was 82, four years younger than her. I said it made me feel a little prickly to read the obit of someone younger than her - - she said it makes her even more uneasy! Well, I'm 58 and I guess I'm now the age when I'll be reading the obits of people who are younger than me...
