Fabulous Friday: "Gonna Make You Sweat"
This week's Great Song, Wrong Title number is "Gonna Make You Sweat" by C + C Music Factory. Clearly it should be called "Everybody Dance Now."
Do you know the story? The great Martha Wash recorded the song as a demo and they recorded the video with another woman lipsynching to Wash's vocals. Wash went to court! Here she is spilling the tea:
One more funny story. I had a VCR back in the late 80s and early 90s but it wasn't fully functional. It was a discarded rental VCR from the record store my brother Howard managed. Somehow the lid to the unit got broken off and in order for it to work you had to put a small weight on top of the videotape. I used a taped-together wad of dead D batteries. Oh Lord, this story is so 80s!
Anyway, this rental VCR would only play, it would not record. So when I saw something enticing coming up on TV I would ask my mom to record it for me, then I'd pick it up from her the next time I went home for the weekend. One of the things she recorded was a PBS special about how the dancing in music videos was in the tradition of the dancing in Hollywood musicals. The title of this special was Everybody Dance Now. But my mother (bless her heart) wrote it on the videotape as Everyone Dance Now. It still makes me laugh.
