My brother Howard alerted me to the death of costume and fashion designer Bob Mackie (age 87). I cried a few tears at my desk!

He's best known for his costume designs for Carol Burnett and Cher on their variety shows. He designed an average of 60 costumes a week for Burnett's show, and eventually he was doing the Sonny and Cher show at the same time! Yeesh.

His most famous creation was the curtain rod dress in Burnett's GWTW parody, Went With the Wind. It was HIS idea to add the curtain rod! He said in an interview that he expected a photo of this dress will be on his tombstone.

Burnett makes her entrance at 2:30 and the audience goes INSANE.

His first major gig as lead designer, rather than assistant to another designer, was doing costumes for Mitzi Gaynor's yearly variety specials. I swear I've watched this number, "Let Go," about fifty times. Everything about it is top notch: the song, the arrangement, the choreography, the performances by Gaynor and the eight guys, and of course that DRESS! Holy wow.

Here is on CBS Mornings. Such a cutie.
