I saw Obsession earlier this week - - my friend Lydia encouraged me to see it, it's an indie horror movie that's getting a lot of attention, has broken all kinds of peculiar records.
I recently came up with two personal goals when it comes to movies and this one checked both boxes:
To see more movies in the theater, rather than streaming at home.
To see more movies about which I know very little.
A little background on the second point: a couple summers ago I saw the movie *Trap* with my friend Max. I was interested because it was starring Josh Hartnett (who I've crushed on since the 90s) and it was written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. I think MNS is hit or miss but sometimes his stuff is really good.
Max and I were having dinner before the movie and he said this:
MAX: I'm really excited to see this.
ME: Yeah, me too.
MAX: The premise is really promising.
ME: Don't say another word, I don't know anything about it.
MAX: You haven't seen the preview?
ME: No, I deliberately set out to learn nothing about this movie. Really - - don't say another word about it.
MAX: OK!
The movie delivered in a way that I had not anticipated, it was so much stronger, more nuanced, and more polished than I expected. Maybe the high point of the movie was the start of the ending credits, when this 1960 classic pop song by The Little Dippers started playing on the soundtrack:
