Did you see the PBS special the other night about women doing variety shows on TV? It was stellar, so many treasures, so much good singing, so many strange choices. The strangest choice was the host of the show: Debby Boone? F'real?
My favorite number was this one, the immortal (though still living, 83 years old) Ann-Margret. Having a supreme diva moment! We all know she was a vivacious dancer but this medley really displays her voice and her va va voom! She is drop dead sexy in a gown that shows no skin at all. I'm sure her bra was something else, maybe she was also aided by a panty girdle (a phrase I don't get to use every day).
I love how the lyrics to "All Of You" have been rewritten - - usually it's addressed to one person but for Miss Sex Kitten For All Time it becomes about all men, all of YOU. Every last one of you, baby! And the minimal choreography with the two guys, then four guys, it's genius.
Just when you think you've reached the limit she turns the dial up to 48 with "By Myself." No holds barred vocalism and the overhead camera shot at the finish, this is not just first class television, this is Western Culture at its zenith.
