Let's have another Friday with another glimpse of Miss Channing, shall we? She hit the big time playing Lorelei Lee in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. She tore up the joint, was the toast of the town, her career was secured with that role.
The original lyrics were changed for the movie, they were too darn racy! In the movie they sing:
Then someone broke my heart in Little Rock
So I up and left the pieces there
Like a little lost lamb I roamed about
I came to New York and I found out
That men are the same way everywhere
The original lyrics:
Then someone broke my heart in Little Rock
So I up and left old Arkansas
Like a little lost lamb I roamed about
I came to New York and I found out
The one you call your daddy ain't yer pa
SHOCKING! Here's Miss Channing singing it the 70s. Pay special attention to the one "the one who done me wrong" - - on the word "one" there's a POW on the drum and a hip-check from her. She nails it but does it with such nonchalance, it just sends me.
And here she is doing it on Tennessee Ernie Ford's show right around the time she was doing the show on Broadway. She seems a little ill at ease and it feels like she's doing that hip-check business but the drum moment is missing. Sad.
