The winner for Best Revival in 1989 was the ultimate mensch of a play, Our Town. I saw that production on TV, it was so beautiful - - Spalding Gray at the stage manager, Penelope Ann Miller as Emily, Eric Stoltz as George, and James Rebhorn and Frances Conroy as Mr. and Mrs. Gibbs. Revelatory, imaginative, and profoundly moving.
The diva in that category was Ain't Misbehavin'. It started in the Manhattan Theatre Club's cabaret space in 1978, moved to Broadway that same year, played London's West End in 1979, was on television in 1982 (see below), and back on Broadway in 1988. A delightful show, full of sass but with moments of drama sprinkled in.
