Diva/Mensch pair for Sept 2, 2026

We've gotten to 1986 and the first Broadway show I ever saw! I was in New York on choir tour in the spring of 1987 and a group of us saw the show that had won the Best Musical Tony, The Mystery of Edwin Drood. It was delightful, a perfect first Broadway show.

Mensch: seeing it a year after it opened


The show is so well made you don't really need to have stars in it. This is what you need in a show, it should hold up to a lot. I was pleased to see George Rose in his Tony-winning role but it appeared that everyone else in the original cast had been replaced. I was sorry not to see Cleo Laine or Betty Buckley though I did see Karen Morrow in the Cleo Laine role and I might have seen the then-unknown (now two-time Tony winner) Donna Murphy as Edwin Drood.




It appears that the cast is lip-synching in the second half of the sequence. Not a good look for a national telecast promoting live theatre.
