Richard Kiley won the 1966 Tony for Best Actor in a Musical for his performance as Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha. One of the other nominees as John Cullum as a psychiatrist in On a Clear Day You Can See Forever.
Diva: Quixote
Mensch: shrink
Quixote is crazy man crazy, off the rails, coo coo for Cocoa Puffs. And what could be more of a diva moment than "The Impossible Freaking Dream"? Dr. Mark Bruckner, on the other hand, is a nice guy. He's the leading man, yes, but he's mostly there to support the more interesting leading lady. He asserts himself with at least two solo songs, including the incredibly lovely title song. The difference between those two songs is a demonstration of diva versus mensch - - "The Impossible Dream" is rousing, startling, it demands a standing ovation. "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever" is a limpid, lovely little ballad. It makes you smile, might even bring a tear to your eye, but it's not rousing.
