I read in The New York Times about the death of Alan Osmond (age 76), the eldest of the Osmond Brothers group (he had two other brothers who were hearing impaired). The Osmonds were Donny and Marie, to me as a kid, but I've discovered a bit of the Osmond Brothers thanks to YouTube. They got their big break on The Andy Williams Show - - here they are doing "Jingle Jangle Jingle," with a semi-surprise appearance by little Donny. They're a little frightening, am I wrong?
I also read in The Times about the death of Michael Tilson Thomas, age 81. His obit reveals him to be an extraordinary musician and a complicated man. He was music director of the San Francisco Symphony for 25 years. I heard him at least once with that orchestra at Carnegie Hall. A 2012 concert of Cage, Cowell, Adams, and Varèse was unforgettable. How could I forget the sight of MTT making a smoothie?
His grandparents were stars of the New York Yiddish theatre scene. He produced a concert about them (The Thomashefskys) and about the Yiddish theatre in general.
