CDA: Gilda Cruz-Romo

I read online yesterday about the death of Gilda Cruz-Romo, a Mexican soprano who sang 160 performances at the Met in the 70s and 80s, the meat and potatoes of the Italian repertoire - - lots of Butterflies, Aidas, Toscas, Trovatores. She sang Desdemona in the opening night performance of 1979, opposite Domingo as Otello and Milnes as Iago. Levine, of course, was conducting.


This clip is from a concert in Mexico City. She's singing one of my favorite arias, "Io son l'umile ancella" from Adriana Lecouvreur. There's so much to love here: the gossamer high notes, the rolled Rs, the eyebrows, the caftan, and the zero gravity arms.
