My official favorite movie of all time, up until a few years ago, was Thoroughly Modern Millie, a madcap romp directed by George Roy Hill starring Julie Andrews as the titular heroine, also Mary Tyler Moore, James Fox, John Gavin, Beatrice Lillie (!), and my adored Carol Channing in her Golden Globe-winning role (and Oscar nommed) as Muzzy Van Hossmere. I estimate I've seen this movie about 45 times. I had easily seen it 25 times before I graduated from high school - - it's a movie I watched whenever I had the house to myself. It's 151 minutes long so I've spent a big chunk of my life watching that movie.
Imagine my delight when I found out it was being made into a tapstravaganza of a Broadway musical. It opened in 2002 and thankfully it was still playing when I moved here. They used a lot of the songs from the movie but also added some new songs. This one is the best:
In my YouTube search I found this adorable clip from a production at the King's Ridge Christian School. The show ends with Millie and her gang exposing Mrs. Meers as a kidnapper and white slaver (a term that might have been altered by 2002) so I'm wondering how they dealt with that in a Christian school. Maybe they changed it so she was making illicit hot chocolate.
In any case, these girls really give it their all. I especially love the chubby girl cast as the office manager. It's interesting to see how the number has been dumbed down - - excuse me, adapted for a different setting.
