I'm crossing categories with this week's pair. I hope you don't mind. They're the two supporting actor categories, so they're still (in a sense) a logical pair. The diva is a diva for all time - - Jennifer Hudson in Dreamgirls. My husband, my best friend Karen, and I saw it at the Ziegfeld the day after Christmas. The Ziegfeld was a huge old movie palace with one big screen. Of course it's now closed. Anyway, the audience was rabid for the movie and cheered and screamed for what felt like a full minute after Hudson's show-stopping performance of "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." The problem was the show was stopped but the movie did not! We missed all of the audio in the following scene, it was kind of hilarious.
The mensch is the marvelous Alan Arkin in Little Miss Sunshine. Such a sweet yet tart performance, so full of humor and humanity. Trigger warning: the clip I included below had tears streaming down my face. But then I'm a pushover.
