I'm devoting the month of August to my favorite Broadway musical, *Follies.* I've loved the show since I first encountered it sometime in the early 90s, but my appreciation of it has grown exponentially the older I've gotten. It's a show about people in their 50s (and beyond) questioning and regretting the choices they made, so I'm sure it will have a deeper resonance as I get deeper into my 50s (and beyond).
Our first diva / mensch pair is the two leading ladies in the show:
Diva: Phyllis
Mensch: Sally
Here are performances of my two favorite songs by these ladies, as sung by Donna Murphy and the late Marin Mazzie in a New York Philharmonic concert celebrating Sondheim's 80th birthday.
