FRI AUG 14

And then there were six - - Francesca and AJ left in the morning, they were going on to Berlin! Again, I think I’ll be seeing more of them in New York. The three of us met for dinner in January (I think this was only the second time I had met AJ). We settled on what part of town was convenient for everyone and I suggested IHOP. They were up for that and would you believe that AJ had never been? I hope we’ll be going back.

This was our last full day. Our only plan was to eat as much of our food as we could, drink wine, swim in the pool, pack, and loll around and be slobs. Our host (who lives on the third floor, we have the first two floors) invited us to hear his band in a neighboring town. We felt like a bit of an excursion that night so why not. The town was TINY, the scene was super cute, it was a lovely thing to do on our last night in Spain.

Our favorite person in the town was a cute little boy, about eight or ten, who was riding around on his scooter and continually talking on a walkie-talkie. We decided he was a spy and reporting back to headquarters. I pointed the arrow at his head in the photo below. I wish I'd gotten a better picture of him but being a good spy, he was evasive.

He noticed us moving to a bench on the side and nonchalantly said something into his walkie-talkie. I was sure he said, “Gringos on the move.”

Karen and I commented on a house on the square.

ME: That house puzzles me. It’s got the stoop like a brownstone but then it’s got this chalet situation on the top.

KAREN: It’s an architectural mullet. Chalet on the top, brownstone on the bottom.

The people in the town took a break from milling around, talking, and drinking beer. They all sat down and started playing a card game in groups of four. We didn’t know what it was but it had a square fabric “board” and they used beans or coins or whatever to keep score. It was really sweet to see little kids playing with old ladies. But as Karen said, these were cool old ladies, not the kind of old ladies we knew when we were kids.

Our host was the bass player in the band. Here are Karen, Bruce, and Mike talking with him:

We watched them setting up and heard them warming up for about an hour. I became unglued (in a good way) when the drummer started a drum bit that was clearly “I Want Candy” - - but it wasn’t. The guitar player was pretty good. Our host played a mean bass but not always in tune. Mike somehow knew that the fourth member of the band played the accordion but we left before he started playing.

More food when we got home. We ate a lot and still threw out plenty. We went to bed with a plan to be up around 3:15am and out the door by 4am. Yeesh.
