I'm choosing two Best Picture nominees for that year. *Citizen Kane* is seen as one of the greatest movies ever made but it didn't win because it was either a) seen as too odd or b) seen as too controversial. The safer win was *How Green Was My Valley,* which really is a lovely movie.
